Plagiarism Policy

We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct in academic and literary publishing. Plagiarism, in any form, is a serious violation of these standards and will not be tolerated. This policy outlines our approach to detecting, preventing, and addressing plagiarism.

Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of using someone else’s work, ideas, or expressions without proper acknowledgment. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Direct Plagiarism: Copying text word-for-word from another source without quotation marks or proper citation.
  • Self-Plagiarism: Reusing one’s own previously published work, in whole or in part, without appropriate citation or acknowledgment.
  • Mosaic Plagiarism: Incorporating phrases, ideas, or data from various sources into a new work without proper citation, often blending copied material with original content.
  • Paraphrasing Plagiarism: Rewriting someone else’s ideas or text without sufficient transformation and without proper citation.

Detection of Plagiarism

  • Initial Screening: All submitted manuscripts are subjected to plagiarism detection software to identify potential instances of plagiarism. This initial screening is conducted by our editorial team.
  • Reviewer Vigilance: Peer reviewers are also tasked with identifying any potential plagiarism during the review process. They are encouraged to report any suspicions to the editorial team.

Consequences of Plagiarism

If plagiarism is detected at any stage of the publication process, the following actions will be taken:

  • Minor Plagiarism: If the plagiarism is minor (e.g., a few sentences are copied without proper citation), the authors will be asked to correct the text and properly attribute the original source. The manuscript will be put on hold until corrections are made.
  • Major Plagiarism: If significant portions of the manuscript are plagiarized, the submission will be rejected outright. The authors will be notified of the reason for rejection and may be barred from submitting future work to HumaPub.
  • Published Works: If plagiarism is discovered after publication, the published work will be retracted immediately. A retraction notice will be issued, and the reasons for retraction will be clearly stated. The authors’ institution(s) and any relevant funding bodies may also be informed of the ethical breach.

Preventive Measures

To prevent plagiarism, HumaPub encourages authors to:

  • Cite Sources Properly: Ensure all sources are appropriately cited and referenced according to the submission guidelines.
  • Use Plagiarism Detection Tools: Authors are advised to use plagiarism detection software to check their manuscripts before submission.
  • Understand Ethical Writing: Authors should familiarize themselves with ethical writing practices and the importance of originality in academic and literary work.

Appeals should be submitted in writing to the editorial office, providing a detailed explanation and any supporting evidence. The appeal will be reviewed by a panel of senior editors, and a final decision will be communicated to the authors.

HumaPub is dedicated to fostering an environment of academic integrity and excellence. Adhering to this plagiarism policy ensures that the work we publish is original, credible, and contributes meaningfully to the global body of knowledge.

Disclosure of conflicts of interest (COI) is essential to maintaining trust among authors, reviewers, readers, and the broader academic and professional communities. This policy outlines the requirements for disclosing potential conflicts of interest.

Definition of Conflict of Interest

A conflict of interest exists when an individual’s financial, personal, or professional relationships could inappropriately influence (or appear to influence) their actions or judgments regarding the content of the manuscript. Conflicts of interest can be financial, non-financial, professional, or personal.

Managing Conflicts of Interest

  • Editorial Decisions: The presence of a disclosed conflict of interest does not automatically preclude publication. The editorial team will evaluate the disclosed conflicts and determine the appropriate course of action, which may include:
    • Requesting additional peer reviews
    • Publishing disclosure statements alongside the manuscript
    • Seeking further clarification from the authors or reviewers
  • Transparency: If a manuscript is accepted, all disclosed conflicts of interest will be published alongside the article to ensure full transparency.

  • Rejection of the manuscript
  • Retraction of published articles
  • Notification of the authors’ institution(s) and any relevant funding bodies
  • Banning the authors from future submissions to HumaPub

Updating Disclosures

Authors must update their conflict of interest disclosures if new conflicts arise during the review or publication process. Reviewers and editors are also required to update their disclosures as necessary.

Data Management

  • Data Retention: Authors are expected to retain their raw data for a minimum of five years after publication. This ensures that the data can be re-evaluated if necessary.
  • Data Accessibility: Authors should ensure that their data is stored in a secure and accessible manner. This includes proper documentation of data files, clear labeling, and adherence to institutional data management policies.
  • Ethical Considerations: Authors must ensure that data involving human or animal subjects comply with ethical standards and have obtained the necessary approvals and consents. Sensitive data should be anonymized to protect privacy and confidentiality.

Verification and Validation

  • Independent Validation: Where feasible, authors should seek to validate their findings through independent replication or collaboration with other researchers.
  • Reviewer Role: Peer reviewers are encouraged to scrutinize the methodology and data presented in the manuscript and may request additional data or methodological details to verify the results.
